Custom infrared saunas fall under NEC Article 424 (fixed electric space heating), not Article 422 appliances. SaunaCloud states code expert staff will speak with inspectors directly — useful if an inspector misclassifies the kit.[1] Independent build guides agree on the classification: “NEC Article 424 applies, not Article 422… Fixed Electric Space Heating, not Appliances.”[3][4] Certification is the gap to check before buying — “virtually all infrared heater kits sold for DIY lack UL, ETL, or CSA approval, while prefab plug-and-play units are approved,” which affects permitting and insurance.[2] Always use a licensed electrician with manufacturer wiring diagrams.
Framing quick spec
